Brief description:

The Victoria University of Wellington is making available the Tongarewa Scholarship to celebrate the University’s commitment to its international student community. Eligible applicants are those either entering their first year of an undergraduate degree or entering a postgraduate degree programme at Victoria University of Wellington. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.

Up to 10 scholarships of NZ$10,000 for Bachelors and Masters degrees and up to 9 scholarships of NZ$5,000 for Masters degrees only.

Scholarship value/inclusions:

The scholarships range from NZ$5,000 to NZ$10,000. This is a partial fee-based scholarship that will be paid towards your tuition fees for 1 year of study. Scholarships are awarded competitively on the basis of academic excellence. They will apply to study in the year following application and will be credited to tuition fees.

Recipients of the Scholarship are guaranteed an offer of a place in the Halls of Residence, provided an accommodation application is received by the Accommodation Service by the required deadline.


Applicants must be commencing international students who are paying full international fees and are either entering their first year of an undergraduate degree or entering a postgraduate degree. They should have received an offer of place from Victoria University of Wellington (conditional or unconditional).

You are not eligible for this scholarship if you:

• Completed your secondary education at a New Zealand school
• Completed a prerequisite degree at Victoria University of Wellington (i.e. the English Proficiency Programme or Foundation Studies Programme)
• Are a Study Abroad or Twinning student from one of the overseas partner universities
• Are in your second or subsequent year of study at Victoria University of Wellington.

Application instructions:

The scholarship application deadline is 1 June 2020 for Trimester 2 2020 entry, 1 September 2020 for Trimester 3 2020 entry and 30 November 2020 for Trimester 1 2021 entry. Applications will normally open 1 month prior to the closing date. You must furnish a personal statement of up to 500 words outlining why you wish to study at Victoria University of Wellington, your academic goals and why you merit the Scholarship. You should also include any leadership positions and details of your involvement in your school or community.
